‘GET HIM OUT!' Former Mrs Brown’s Boys star Rory Cowan reveals ‘Grandad’ once hit the roof after finding him in bed with a man

 

FORMER Mrs Brown’s Boys star Rory Cowan has revealed how ‘Grandad’ once hit the roof — after finding him in bed with a man.

Future TV stars Rory and Dermot ‘Bugsy’ O’Neill shared a room while touring with stand-up Brendan O’Carroll in the early-90s.

And Rory, 60, tells in new memoir Mrs Cowan’s Boy how he picked up a fella at a bar in Sligo — but was rumbled by Bugsy the next morning.

Rory said: “He took one look at my friend and let a roar. ‘Get him out! If he’s still here when I come out of the shower, he’s going through the window.’

“I knew that Bugsy was only joking but I still hustled my friend out of the room. ‘You won’t believe it,’ Bugsy told everyone later ‘He was in bed with another fella’.”

But Rory was left alone in the early hours after sneaking into the room.

'UNBELIEVABLE SLAGGING'

He said: “Bugsy could snore for Ireland, so I told the guy, ‘If Bugsy’s snoring, it’s alright but if he stops, he’s woken up’.

“Anyway, into bed we get and Bugsy is snoring away, and then he stops — and we freeze. He lets out a loud snore and we know he’s fallen back to sleep.

“The next morning Bugsy woke up and got out of bed, and headed off to the ­bathroom, he caught sight of the two of us in bed.”

He added: “This was at a time when you could be sent to jail if you were convicted of having sex with another man.”

But Rory is keen to stress that Bugsy, who was working as a roadie at the time, very much “accepted him as gay” and was never homophobic.

He writes: “They’d give me an unbelievable slagging, but it was quite the opposite of ­prejudice. Having a gay member of the team gave them a bit of kudos.”

At this point in time, the crew would tour Ireland doing 250 to 300 gigs a year with boss Brendan.

And Rory recalls how Bugsy was used by Brendan if there were any issues getting paid.

Rory said: “He was a tough guy, and then only in his 30s, so when an owner said they weren’t paying us because the place wasn’t full, even though you could hardly move, Brendan would say ‘That’s no problem. We’ll take it in kind, Bugsy, take the television.’

“Dermot would go up to the TV and pretend to unscrew it from the wall and the owner would say, ‘Ah here’s your bleeding money, you’ll never play here again’ — and they’d ring the next day looking to book more shows.”
