Mrs Brown's Boys will be returning for six episodes in 2023, creator Brendan O’Carroll has revealed.

He said the BBC originally wanted a four-part mini-series this year as part of the celebrations for the Corporation’s centenary.

But he said he had trouble booking studio space, which was suddenly in demand when Covid restrictions were lifted.

So he is now planning to make them next year, along with   two more Christmas specials for 2023, too.

He told The Sun’s TV mag: ‘The BBC were adamant that they wanted to get four episodes, so we thought: "Let's book studios now for 2023 and we can do the four then".

‘We’re hoping to do the four-part mini-series of Mrs Brown and then two more Christmas specials at the end of the year as well. I absolutely love it - I get goosebumps that Mrs Brown has become part of Christmas.

This year's Mrs Brown's Boys Christmas special, Shining Mammy, will air on BBC One at 10.25pm tomorrow, after EastEnders. A second special will be aired on New Year's Day at 10pm, called Mammy's Hair Loom.

Mrs Brown's Boys will RETURN to screens with a new series for the first time in 10 years - after two-year filming delay due to the pandemic

  Mrs Brown's Boys is returning to TV for a new four-part series. The hit sitcom has been a fixture of the Christmas TV schedules for over a decade but the upcoming episodes will mark the first new series since 2013. Creator Brendan O'Carroll - who also leads the cast as matriarch Agnes Brown - admitted the show has been 'thwarted twice' due to the COVID-19 pandemic, as it was originally scheduled to hit screens in 2021. Speaking of the new series, which will be filmed in spring ahead of broadcast later this year after a 10-year break, the 67-year-old comic said: 'This mini-series was actually planned for 2021.
